Quilts, blankets, throws
Plush velvets and mood boosting patchworks: the seasonal joy of hunkering down
The season of crisp sunshine and extra layers has hit in Oxford. Much to Chris’s dismay, I’ve pulled my faintly ridiculous (because it’s so heavy and luxurious), pale blue velvet blanket out of its box. I drape it dramatically on the bed, proclaiming how chilly I am before wrestling it over to his side when I get too hot.
November this isn’t. And yet…
Given there’s a whisper of frost in the air it seems right to offer a round up of the quilts and blankets on my A/W 2024 radar. We all know there’s a glut of beautiful neutrals out there and for that reason I’ve not included them here. Instead I’ve curated a mix of textures, colours and crafts with which to toast the chillier months ahead.
Remember, anything you use on the bed is a great way of giving the room a seasonal, impermanent refresh. Spread it out to hide mismatched bedding (guilty) and I wish you many a snuggly evening ensconced in a new layer of colour or pattern at home.
Quilts

Patchwork quilts are up there as firm favourites for me; anything with that much stitching deserves a medal!
I love the subtle stripe and soft colour combo of this Rowen + Wren one. Great for those of you that love a natural, pared back scheme with a scandi feel.
This next beauty from Dorset based Projekti TYYNY makes me think of mugs of tea in chunky Emma Bridgewater cups and trips to Gifford’s Circus. They’ve a generous sale running at the moment and you can take an extra 15% off the sale price of this one with the website code
TOAST doing what it does best: rich, earthy colours matched with a beautiful design. I see this pared with a knocked back, neutral paint colour with a bit of red in its base like Oxford or London Stone by Farrow & Ball
Blankets
The Melin Tregwynt blanket is a distinctive character on the Welsh blanket making scene and I’m a fan of the vintage star pattern you can see below.
I like this biscuity colour way with those pops of green. Use it to drive the rest of the scheme in your room.
Oh OK, one neutral then. Inspired by a friend of mine who is the queen of the lightweight, fleecey blanket- super snuggly and simple to store:
My last blanket option, at a great price point via the Designer’s Guild, is this rather summery looking fellow. Brilliant against buttery lemon paint in a child’s bedroom or to lift any space that’s taking itself too seriously
Velvety loveliness
If a sumptuous plain velvet is what you’re after then Heals routinely has a good range of colours on the go. Look out for last season shades as they come into the sale (bottom right). I like that dusky pink for added texture in a tonal, pattern free scheme.
Oliver Bonas serves us some ruffles and a good two tone reversible option:
I can’t, I shouldn’t. I mustn’t. But I really, really want to get this rust coloured beauty with its icing sugar stitching and linen bottom. And she’ll stitch your name in to it too! Somebody stop me! (Loads of colour options and sizes available over on Etsy)
There we are. I’m sure as I hit send the weather gods will smile wryly and send us some of that Indian Summer after all but you know what they say: better prepared etc.
Until next time,
S
