Hello lovely lot. I hope these post Christmas days are treating you well? Although I’m no longer 14 press ganging my mum and sister on to the bus so that we can hit the Boxing Day sales in Oxford, the essential spirit remains with me. So here I am sending you some of my favourite sale picks for the home.
What’s that I hear you cry?
You can’t bear the thought of buying things whilst the wrapping paper’s still curled in the recycling bin?
I get it. It’s just if you’re in the market for long term, key pieces then now, annoyingly, is a chance to lock in a good price. I’ve covered a range of styles and price points- see what you think.
You’ve got decent back support, wipeable seats and a solid hardwood which feels like a win-win-win…
Vintage & Antique furniture
OK, maybe a cocktail trolley doesn’t count as a ‘key piece’ but for a post dry Jan pick me up, how about this pleasingly round number? Save the cost of shipping plus a bit with its sale price. It’s not too deep either so it will sit neatly against a wall when you’re not hosting.
Nisse Strinning developed the string shelving unit back in the 60s and it has endured. You choose how you set this up (i.e you don’t have to have the side pieces of shelves attached where they are here) and you can arrange the shelves to suit the height of your books. Good in a home office or somewhere that can carry the hard lines. Over 50% off.
Coming up at auction with an estimate of somewhere between £200-400 (plus 30% buyers premium), this sweet chair looks to be in good nick. Covered in a soft, faded Kilim, this will sit nicely in many a room and with lovely little legs on brass casters, too.
Antique oak, Edwardian storage cupboard
Take £600 off the original ticket price for this handsome piece. I love the grain. There’s plenty of storage to be had here and you could try it for laundry, larder or folded clothes.
For a British spin on the mid century work of designers like Otto Møller try these teak and berry seats by Sutcliffe. Down from £400 to £190 per chair, there’s good savings to be had here. You’ve got decent back support, wipeable seats and a solid hardwood which feels like a win-win-win.
New furniture
If like me you shudder when you walk past Urban Outfitters (aggressively youthful clothing), you’d be forgiven for not thinking of them for homeware.
Soho Home is running a broad-ish sale at the moment and you can save a whopping £1000 on this shelving + sideboard unit. The pop hole at the back of the cupboard for wires is a nice touch, as is the marble top and tambour doors.
If like me you shudder when you walk past Urban Outfitters (aggressively youthful clothing), you’d be forgiven for not thinking of them for homeware. As it happens, there are a few good things to be had and although this is very much an ‘open-the-door-and-chuck-it-in’ situation, I do think the simple design and cane holds its own.
Sometimes living areas can get a bit leggy. You know: dining chairs, coffee tables, sofas, side tables etc. If you realise you’ve got a mass of sticks below knee level then you might like to switch things up and avoid them on your dining table. This one is an oak veneer and, let’s face it, good old La Redoute always seems to be having a sale, BUT, I do think this one feels very west coast swish.
If you’re on the hunt for a l-shape sofa (and I know a few of you are) then now might be the time to lock in a price reduction. Look for a brand like Love-Your-Home who use good materials and speak to their environmental impact and don’t forget to think about if you want a left or right handed configuration. You’re looking at a £400+ discount on this type at the moment!
Thanks to one of my clients, I’ve an inside track on excess sofa stock from the likes of Loaf and Sofa.com at reduced prices, but you’ll have to email me if you’d like access to that. :)
Decorative items
I’ve linked you to 40% off the brass ceiling pendant so that you can feel smug when you walk past a Chloé store
Look, do I have a couple of thou to drop on Sweden’s gloriously feminine answer to the grandfather clock? No, no I do not. Perhaps less pressingly, I don’t have the space or architecture for her either but do I want her, dear reader? Yes, yes I do. 40% off on 1st Dibs.
For the price, this 160 x230cm rug is a sunny steal. Check the pictures for its pleasing texture and thank the people at Zara for turning out another winning design at a high street price.
Louis Wisedorf, a Danish architect and industrial designer, demonstrated the power of versatility in his design work and the ‘Multi-Lite’ is no exception. I’ve linked you to 40% off the brass ceiling pendant so that you can feel smug when you walk past a Chloé store. A piece of design to treasure.
That should do for now. Happy browsing and see you in 2025,
